Mueller, Sr., and Ruth (nee’ Polley) Mueller, in Grand Forks, ND, and reborn into the Kingdom of God by Holy Baptism at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, Niagara, ND, on May 31, 1953. He was educated in Christian Day Schools in Hankinson, ND, and Bay City, MI, and attended high school in Bay City.

On June 21, 1975, he was united in marriage with the former Faith Anderson at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bay City, MI. The Lord has blessed their marriage with three children, Bert (31, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Amherst, NE, married to Kristen – two children, Naomi Joy, 3, and Micah Herbert, 1), Nathan (28, a sergeant in the Kentucky National Guard, married to Melissa) and Carol (22, working towards a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance at Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois). Rev. Mueller has served the Lord as pastor of three parishes in The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod: Pastor, Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Chicago (1979-1983); Associate Pastor, Zion Lutheran Church, Bethalto, IL (1983-1990); and Pastor, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waterloo, IL (1990-1994). Now serving in his fifth term as District President, Rev. Mueller was first elected to this office in February 1994. He has also served in the Southern Illinois District as treasurer of the pastoral conference, District Secretary, and District Second and First Vice President. Presently he is heavily engaged in a program of visitation of the pastors and congregations of the Southern Illinois District.
President Herbert Mueller was appointed by Synodical President Al Barry to the Synod’s Commission on Ministerial Growth and Support in September 1998, serving through the Synod Convention in 2007. From 2004-2007 he served as Chairman of that commission. In April 2003, he was also elected to the Program Committee of the Council of Presidents of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. In 2004 he began serving on the Concordia Pulpit Resources Advisory Committee and has also served in the past on the Synod’s Colloquy Committee.
President Mueller has made five “mission” trips to Southern Africa. The first, in October 1997, was at the behest of the Board for Mission Services of the LCMS. One of the results of that trip was a mission partnership between the Lutheran Church in Southern Africa and the Southern Illinois District signed in July 2000. The second trip, in October – November 2002, was organized with eight other members of the Southern Illinois District South Africa Mission Task Force to develop further the District’s mission partnership with the Lutheran Church in Southern Africa. The Task Force returned to South Africa for a 12 day visit in March 2004. President Mueller and others from the Task Force traveled to Southern Africa also in May 2007 and May 2008 to check on the projects we share as part of this partnership.
Rev. Mueller enjoys nothing more than to help God’s people in Southern Illinois speak and live the love of Jesus more effectively, in our communities, our parishes, and beyond. He simply counts it a privilege to serve.
